Having a pair of twins is a real possibility when conceiving through IVF. Though the drugs used during the IVF treatment is often cited as the reason for having twins or multiples, it is the number of embryos that are transferred that essentially cause multiple birth. If multiple embryos are

In most cases, two or more embryos are transferred. This is done with the hope that at least one of the embryos will successfully implant. If two or more of these embryos implant themselves and grow, the couple may have fraternal twins or multiples. Some couples have only one embryo transferred but the embryo then splits to form two babies. These twins will be identical. In IVF, fraternal twins are more likely to be born than identical ones.

When fresh embryos are used, the probability of having a twin pregnancy with IVF for women under 35 is 12.1 per cent and for women over 35, it is 9.1 per cent. The chances of having twins or multiples become lesser as the age of the woman increases. Fresh embryos are more likely to bear twins than frozen embryos.
