Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in IVF
During the IVF treatment, your body will be subject to a plethora of drugs, medications and hormones. If using fresh eggs hormone medications will be given to the woman to stimulate the production of eggs in her ovaries. While most women do not have adverse reactions, some may experience ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome defined as an exaggerated response to hormones. During this, the ovaries swell and are painful.
Symptoms of the ovarian syndrome can be noticed within a week of taking the hormone medication, usually in the form of injections. The symptoms can also take more than two weeks to manifest. The symptoms can be mild with slight pain, vomiting, nausea, bloating, diarrhoea and tenderness of the abdomen. In severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, severe pain, severe vomiting and nausea, rapid weight gain, decreased urination, shortness of breath, enlarged abdomen and blood clots are seen. If these symptoms are noticed, talk to your fertility expert immediately as you will need prompt treatment.
