Types of minimal invasive surgery

The role of surgery in treating infertility

Surgical intervention using laparoscopy and hysteroscopy have a major role to play in overcoming infertility for a large number of women. The doctor will undertake a thorough examination – physical, USG, blood work – to determine the causes of infertility and if it is ascertained that surgery may improve a woman’s chances of conceiving, minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy and hysteroscopy are prescribed.

Using small incisions and high-definition cameras along with probes inserted via the small incisions. The use of minimally invasive procedures reduces pain, recovery time, risk of infection and blood loss, while also providing better surgical outcomes.

Laparoscopy

Laparoscopic surgeries use a long, thin device called a laparoscope and performed by making small incisions. These are about 5 to 10mm in width. The laparoscope is attached with a small, high-definition camera that sends a live-feed to the doctor’s monitor, which aids in the assessment of the internal structures. The scope also includes various surgical tools which help perform necessary procedures and correct the deformities. These procedures are used for the treatment of ovarian cysts, fibroids and endometriosis and others.

Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopic surgeries are performed using a device known as a hysteroscope that is inserted into the body via the vaginal cavity, through the cervix to reach the uterus. The hysteroscope is attached with a small, high-definition camera that sends a live-feed to the doctor’s monitor, which aids in assessing the internal structures. The main advantage of this is that there is no need for making any incision. This procedure is used to diagnose and correct various abnormalities such as uterine bleeding, uterine fibroids, endometrial scarring, and endometrial polyps.
